Reformer and MAT Pilates

Pilates is a system of physical fitness developed by Joseph Pilates over a century ago, originally known as ‘Contrology.’ It emphasises controlled, precise movements, core strength, and flexibility, with the goal of improving posture, balance, and overall body awareness. Central to the method are both mat-based exercises and the use of equipment like the Reformer, designed to support and challenge the body in equal measure.

While the name ‘Contrology’ is less commonly used today, its principles—mindful movement, control, and alignment—remain at the heart of modern Pilates practice. Now a globally recognised fitness approach, Pilates is celebrated for its ability to build strength, improve flexibility, and enhance overall wellbeing.

Details on all of my Reformer and MAT Pilates are detailed below.

Private 1:1 or 2:1 Reformer sessions can be booked by contacting Simone directly.

Previous MAT Pilates experience is not a requirement, but those who have practiced on the MAT will be able to transition their understanding of the core Pilates principles into their Reformer practice.

Ultimately, these sessions will build strength, flexibility and promote alignment within the body.

Each Pilates session offers a full-body workout, guided by the core Pilates principles: Breath, Concentration, Centre, Control, Precision, and Flow.

You’ll be taken through a carefully structured sequence based on Joseph Pilates’ original Mat 34 exercises, designed to build strength, improve flexibility, realign the body, and enhance posture.

Sessions will often incorporate small equipment such as hand weights, Pilates rings, and balls to both support and challenge your practice.

The small group Reformer Pilates class (maximum 2 people) combines the benefits of personalised training with the motivation of working alongside a like-minded person.

With the support of the Balanced Body Allegro 2 Reformer, you’ll build core strength, improve posture, increase flexibility, and enhance overall body awareness. The intimate class size ensures hands-on guidance, safe technique, and workouts tailored to your individual goals

Recommended for those with previous Pilates experience due to being a dynamic, faster-paced class, Express classes are designed to deliver a strong, full-body Pilates workout in just 35 minutes, making it the perfect option to energise your day and fit into a busy schedule.

Express “Pilates Sculpt” classes incorporate light weights for increased intensity, and Monday’s Express Men on Mats class is a dynamic class designed for men to build core strength, mobility, and full-body stability.

35-minute private sessions are available for those starting their Pilates journey, whether on the Mat or Reformer.

These sessions are ideal for beginners, anyone looking to build confidence, or those returning to exercise after injury. Each session is tailored to your individual needs and can also be adapted to reflect the focus and flow of my stretch classes.

The monthly Hybrid Pass is perfect for those committed to regular practice and looking to maximise results.

This pass offers a balanced mix of personalised attention and group sessions to support consistent progress and noticeable change.

The pass includes: 2 x Group Reformer Sessions | 6 x 55-minute classes | 2 x 35-minute classes

Without meaning to, I have fallen in love with Pilates and that is down to the manner in which Simone teaches and the tone that she sets in all of her classes. Classes at Studio Eighty Nine are small, meaning Simone is able to provide positive and detailed feedback.  She takes time to familiarise herself with the capabilities of all her students, slowly and gently leading us to realise strengths that we’ve never previously had.  She is invested in her students as individuals and her business seems secondary.  I leave her classes slightly fatigued, slightly stronger and always uplifted. | Mary K
